I've been faking my photography skills.

So, I got a new DSLR camera over a year ago, and I still haven't learned how to really use it. Most of the photos I take are edited quite a bit by photoshop. It's a bad habit I've got; since I use photoshop on a daily basis for work/ad designs, it's really easy to take a bad photo and make it look like I really know how to take a good one. Because of this, I've neglected a lot of the functions on my camera, relying far too much on the functions of photoshop to bring a picture to life.
I decided I finally needed to learn how to use my awesome camera, so I signed up for a photography class! I'm so excited. I took a photography class back in college, but we used stone aged film cameras and dark rooms. That was nearly 6 years ago, so it will be great to freshen up my skills while learning the ins and outs of my camera. I hope to be shooting in manual by the time the class is over! I'll be sure to document my progress here when class starts in June. Did I mention how excited I am?

I have to say, the darkroom is my favorite thing ever!

As far as photoshop goes, I really think it's all about balance--sure, use it to make a good photo pop, but you should also be able to take pictures SOOTC as well--so kudos to you for taking a class!

Oooh I'm excited for you as well! I haven't taken a photography class since my freshman year of high school lol!

Yeah, I feel the same way minus the photoshop as I don't have that program anymore. I still don't know how to use my DSLR and want to take a class but I feel like I have no time!

You must report back afterward and tell us if the class helped!

I took a class online and learned SO much you can email me if you want more info on that too because it was SUPER cheap and I could go at my own pace.

Good luck with the class! Like a previous commenter though, I'd love to feel more comfortable with Photoshop...

Oh, have fun! I'm still learning my DSLR, too. It's an adventure, alright. Editing certainly helps. :)

I took one of those stone age classes to back in Fall 2002... it's one of those things we will be able to tell our kids about that dates us! :)

I am the same as you! It would be wonderful to take classes again; that's so exciting! I had taken several as part of my BFA in college right around the same time as you, but I'd be hard-pressed to recall a lot of that info, especially since I haven't used my regular old SLR in ages. Our current camera was billed as "DSLR-like" but I haven't tried out much of those functions yet. I do like working in photoshop though, it's pretty much a staple!
